The question is, what\u2019s happening specifically in the world of mental health technology?<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong>Investments:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><em>As we dive into investments there are too many to mention all at once, so here are a few from\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalstartups.org\/top\/mental\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><em>MedicalStartups.org<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0top 35 mental health startups of 2019. Wearables, VR, Biopharma, Platforms, AI, Apps, Transcranial Stimulation and more OOOH MYYY!<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Funding: $176.3 m<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong>Neuronetics<\/strong>\u00a0has pioneered and refined the NeuroStar TMS Therapy system. This non-invasive, non-systemic treatment for depression uses a highly focused, pulsed magnetic field to stimulate function in targeted brain regions.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Funding: $116M<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong>Calm<\/strong>\u00a0is working to bring the amazing benefits of meditation to a busy world. Calm operates an online portal which allows busy and information loaded web workers to reduce stress.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Funding: $54M<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong>BlackThorn Therapeutics<\/strong>\u00a0is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company that uses a novel and robust platform (INFORM\u2122) to link behavioral deficits with brain physiology to discover and develop targeted treatments for neurobehavioral disorders.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Funding: $14.7M<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong>BrainCheck<\/strong>\u00a0is a mobile interactive test for cognitive health.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Funding: $8M<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong>Spring<\/strong>\u00a0uses AI to help patients with mental health problems feel better faster.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Funding: $6.6M<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong>BioBeats<\/strong>\u00a0builds stress app that respond to physiologic data and learns from how a person interacts with others, to help people live more engaging, healthier lives.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Funding: $6.3M<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong>Sentio<\/strong>\u00a0is a behavioral health startup offering an emotion-sensing wearable that that provides continuous monitoring and real-time personalized interventions for individuals who suffer from anxiety and depression.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong>Partnerships:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><em>Next up is mental health partnerships, but what is a partnership per se? A partnership is a network that includes hospitals, physicians, providers and other delivery system partners. Enabling organizations to provide the full continuum of services in its community or geographic area. At this point in time, we are seeing many of the bigger dogs coming to the partnership table the rest of the pack will surely be bounding along shortly. Here are just a few to highlight:<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20190613005791\/en\/Signaling-Industry-Wide-Shift-Integrated-Mental-Health-Quartet\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Quartet<\/a>, an innovative health care technology and services company, announced a strategic partnership with Centene Corporation to ensure the most vulnerable populations have access to mental health care.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ptcommunity.com\/wire\/cdphp-partners-valera-health-break-boundaries-traditional-mental-health-and-substance-use\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Valera Health<\/a>\u00a0and Capital District Physicians\u2019 Health Plan, Inc. (CDPHP) are pleased to announce a multi-year alliance that will expand member access to high-quality mental health and substance use case management services.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillymag.com\/healthcare-news\/2019\/08\/05\/neauroflow-digital-health-platform\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">NeuroFlow<\/a>\u00a0announced a new partnership with Jefferson Health, one of the largest health systems in Philadelphia. Their software enables behavioral health specialists and psychologists to remotely monitor a patient\u2019s mental wellness.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong>Merger and Acquisitions (M&amp;A):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><em>Like the Cookie Monster gobbling down cookies, there has been a lot of movement across the digital health space in Mergers and Acquisitions, most notably Google\u2019s acquisition of Fitbit in the billions.<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><em>In terms specifically of mental health tech here is what\u2019s been happening across this M&amp;A landscape.\u00a0<\/em>According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/products.levinassociates.com\/aboutus\/press-releases\/behavioral-health-care-ma-activity-dropped-in-q32019-according-to-acquisition-data-from-healthcaremanda-com\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Irving Levin Associates<\/a>, behavioral health care M&amp;A (into which mental health falls) dropped in the third quarter down 35% with only 17 publicly announced transactions. Private equity firms cleaned up in the space as purchasers accounting for 76% of all behavioral health sector deals.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.h2c.com\/3q19-healthcare-ma-transactions\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Hammond Hanlon and Camp (H2C)<\/a>\u00a0Industry Insights, they state that there were 21 behavioral health transactions in the third quarter of 2019, remained very active and showed a 137% increase from the same 9 months in 2018.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong>Shuttered Doors:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">It seems that there are a thousand and one ways for tech start-ups to end up pushing up daisies and shuttering their doors. This year thus far in the entire tech startup industry 480 plus companies have in one way or another closed down. It doesn\u2019t seem to vary too much from tech sector to tech sector which is why we often hear about tech\u2019s 90% mortality rate. The following infographic from\u00a0<strong>CB<\/strong>INSIGHTS does a great job of breaking it all down.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3805\" src=\"https:\/\/ttconf.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/0_DzsovoGk3inS0a7E.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ttconf.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/0_DzsovoGk3inS0a7E.png 700w, https:\/\/ttconf.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/0_DzsovoGk3inS0a7E-280x300.png 280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<figure>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Here are a couple of our brothers-and sisters-in-arms in the mental health technology sector who are no longer active according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbinsights.com\/research\/startup-failure-post-mortem\/?utm_source=CB+Insights+Newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=c2f19074ee-newsletter_general_Sat_20191019&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_9dc0513989-c2f19074ee-92836933\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>CB<\/strong>INSIGHTS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong>Sophia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The company, which sought to match people with life counselors, now redirects users to other platforms seeking mental wellness resources:<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong>Arivale<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">A company in the aging whole-body wellness space whose vision was to transform personal health.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong>A Resurrection:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Every once in a while a heartbeat emerges postmortem and we are happy to say that according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medcitynews.com\/2019\/02\/failed-behavioral-health-startup-lanterns-tech-lives-again-at-spring-health\/?rf=1\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">MedCityNews<\/a>\u00a0Lantern rises to live on as part of Spring Health delivering CBT based therapies for chronic disease management.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Physical healthcare and behavioral healthcare funding in contrast always tends to be a bit lopsided. We need to all be aware and mindful that wellness is all encompassing, and we cannot have true physical health without also concentrating on mental health as well<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">As always, in closing, we all must remember that mental health is never a 1 size fits all approach. Although the diagnosis name may be the same, how it presents can be vastly different in each case. We need to better understand each case and groupings. In order to do so, we need to paint a daily picture and for that we need data and transformative technologies.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">AND<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Remember that it is also a double-edged sword. With any health data comes a responsibility of profound ethical proportions.
