As a TT entrepreneur through my work with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/getsiempo.com\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Siempo<\/a>, I\u2019m one of many in the community who has been reflecting on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/reports\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">what time it is on Earth<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@aandrewdunn\/why-im-dedicated-to-practicing-humane-business-71d3400e45f5\" rel=\"noopener\">holding a strong intention to show up with more integrity<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 to be on the right side of history, find\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.onenation.party\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">all-win solutions<\/a>\u00a0and alignment across all aspects of my business, from fundraising to product development.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">In preparing this, one theme kept surfacing, as it seems to be one of the great challenges of our time:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><em>How can we bring more heart into a head-designed world?<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/transformative-technology\" rel=\"noopener\">If the predictions about this industry are accurate<\/a>, then the way TT companies show up may serve as a model for how the next generation of startups are built. That\u2019s an amazing opportunity and responsibility. So let\u2019s drop into our hearts, experiment and share wisdom outwards.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h1 data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Starting with Why<\/h1>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">First, let\u2019s take a step back and check in on what we\u2019re doing here.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><em>Fundamentally<\/em>, what\u2019s your why?<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IPYeCltXpxw\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Simon Sinek famously offered<\/a>\u00a0this \u201cStart with Why\u201d approach to clarifying a business\u2019s reason for existing. Simon says: \u201cPeople don\u2019t buy WHAT you do; they buy WHY you do it.\u201d Always begin with an inquiry here (vs. starting with WHAT your product is and then backing out a why) and return periodically to reconnect with the essence of the thing that you will move mountains for.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><em>Ethically<\/em>, consider if your startup should exist period and what potential consequences may arise (see:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ethicalos.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Ethical-OS-Toolkit-2.pdf\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Omidyar Ethical OS<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/humanetech.com\/designguide\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Humane Technology Worksheet<\/a>). Investor and TT speaker\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=y5cS6cvZ__k\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Tim Chang argues<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cTech isn\u2019t good or bad, it\u2019s just a tool. Therefore, what matters most is the intention or energy we wield it with. That\u2019s what we should we be looking at now.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">None of us, as investors or founders, have ever asked the question: \u2018Yes this can make money. Should we? Should this exist? Is this good for people?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">While you can never fully predict the impact of introducing a new agent into a system, you can go through the exercise of creating negative design personas and brainstorming how the product might generate negative externalities or be used for malevolent purposes, and then adjust your strategy accordingly.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><em>Personally,<\/em>\u00a0are you ready to commit years of your life to this? If everything we create is an expression of who we are and what we value, all our fears and biases and traumas, are you at a place in your adult development to responsibly steward a new innovation and a team of humans? What can you and your team start doing today to progress on that path?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h1 data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">What are you? Choosing Corporate &amp; Ownership Structures<\/h1>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Alright, now let\u2019s get into the meat.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">You and a couple of friends have an idea and decide to start hacking something together. First thing you do is obviously form a company (Delaware c-corp), right?<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Maybe! Consider holding off on formalizing anything until there is more clarity on what is emerging and who is involved. Focus on building trust and coherence. Get creative about exchanging value before pulling out the paperwork. For the meticulous,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/slicingpie.com\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Slicing Pie<\/a>\u00a0is an excellent tool to track contributions in the early days.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">While startups typically incorporate as for-profit c-corporations, there has been a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/1411494\/tech-non-profits-are-spreading-like-tech-startups\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">recent proliferation of non-profit tech companies<\/a>. Many celebrated ventures are playing in the middle ground between the two, as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/benefitcorp.net\/faq\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Public Benefit Corporations<\/a>\u00a0(Kickstarter) and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozilla.org\/en-US\/about\/governance\/organizations\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">hybrid organizations<\/a>\u00a0(Mozilla), or alternative for-profit models like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coops.tech\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">worker-owned co-ops<\/a>\u00a0or a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pentagram.com\/news\/colin-forbes-on-the-structure-of-pentagram\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Pentagram<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<figure>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3810\" src=\"https:\/\/ttconf.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/0_VFkQDqzXAeV9eOx9.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"638\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ttconf.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/0_VFkQDqzXAeV9eOx9.png 1000w, https:\/\/ttconf.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/0_VFkQDqzXAeV9eOx9-300x191.png 300w, https:\/\/ttconf.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/0_VFkQDqzXAeV9eOx9-768x490.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><br \/>\nSource:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.spcwa.com\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">SPC WA<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">This table breaks down the different entity types, and clarifies the difference between a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bcorporation.net\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">B-Corp<\/a>\u00a0(certification) and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/benefitcorp.net\/faq\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Public Benefit Corporation<\/a>\u00a0(legal incorporation type). I want to double click on Public Benefit Corporation because I think it\u2019s a great middle ground that has advantages for every stakeholder in your business, without closing doors to investment and growth opportunities.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">It basically says \u201chey we exist to serve more than our shareholders and customers \u2014 we also exist for this stated public benefit and are going to measure success by how well we progress on that mission.\u201d The PBC entity type provides legal protection to directors to balance financial and non-financial interests when making major decisions, and is attractive to impact investors, mission-driven talent and potential partnerships. It sends a signal. Examples include AltSchool, Kickstarter, Patagonia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h1 data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">What do you need? Choosing a Boss and a Diet<\/h1>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Let\u2019s switch gears to talk about fundraising.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">According to the Kauffman Foundation,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kauffman.org\/currents\/2018\/07\/3-trends-that-prevent-entrepreneurs-from-accessing-capital\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">81% of entrepreneurs do not access a bank loan or venture capital<\/a>. In fact,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kauffman.org\/currents\/2016\/05\/three-facts-you-probably-didnt-know-about-and-venture-capital-and-entrepreneurship\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">venture capital accounts for less than 1% of all startup funding<\/a>. In a startup culture that celebrates multi-million dollar funding milestones seemingly above all other success metrics, it\u2019s no wonder that most founders assume a path of venture capital for their babies. However, the VC route may not be the right fit for all TT companies, and fortunately\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.usejournal.com\/dont-go-chasing-unicorns-2fa84d88437\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">there are many compelling alternatives to explore<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3811\" src=\"https:\/\/ttconf.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/0_dI68IrgTB_18nkMu.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"597\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ttconf.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/0_dI68IrgTB_18nkMu.png 1000w, https:\/\/ttconf.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/0_dI68IrgTB_18nkMu-300x179.png 300w, https:\/\/ttconf.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/0_dI68IrgTB_18nkMu-768x458.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<figure>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><em>Note of caution: playing with alternative forms of fundraising may narrow your pool of available capital now and in the future. While impact investing is on the rise and there is a nascent community of \u201cpatient\u201d investors open to sub-market returns, it\u2019s still the early adopter phase of the trend, so supply is small and may not be available for your specific market niche. It\u2019s also possible that later stage investors may not be thrilled about creative forms of early stage funding, in the example of equity crowdfunding.<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">What I do want you to take away here is the funding structure you choose is an operating system for a relationship that can last for many years. So\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/baremetrics.com\/blog\/startup-funding\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">know your options<\/a>\u00a0and choose wisely \u2014 don\u2019t waste time on chasing venture if you\u2019re not suitable for it. If venture is right for you, know what you\u2019re getting yourself into.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Whenever you are thinking about taking money, consider the intention behind it. What are you signing up for? Where is it the capital coming from upstream? Who are the LPs and how are they leveraging their resources in the world? i.e you\u2019re choosing a boss, so who do you want to make money for?<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">And on a mental health note, post round depression is a real thing. Don\u2019t sign up for something that you don\u2019t know if you can commit to, that your heart doesn\u2019t truly desire. If you care about your wellbeing and the integrity of the mission, be discerning about how to bring that into the world. There\u2019s an interesting tension between output and self-care for TT founders; what does it look like to embody this balance in personal and professional life?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h1 data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">How will you do it? Implementation Structures<\/h1>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Now that you\u2019ve chosen your identity, why you\u2019re doing it, who you want to work for and how you want to grow, a final major area to consider is how you want to organize people to make it happen!<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><em>Hire in-house, outsource or share contractors? Didn\u2019t Zappos do something cool? How can you be an effective leader in this time of disruption?<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Naturally, these choices will depend on who is at the table, what their needs are, and what gets prioritized at the earliest stages of growth. Most accelerators support entrepreneurs in finding product market fit and raising money, with organizational development as an afterthought. If the core of any business concerns how to cohere a bunch of people to do an important thing, then why aren\u2019t we talking about how to do that better?<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Fortunately some best practices and models are emerging for the empathetic and purpose-driven entrepreneurs out there. So much has been studied and written on this topic. I\u2019m just going to call out a few frameworks and trends that I think are most relevant for this cohort.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">First, let\u2019s take a look at teal organizations. Inspired by Ken Wilbur\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/integrallife.com\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Integral Theory<\/a>, Frederic Laloux wrote a book called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reinventingorganizations.com\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Reinventing Organizations<\/a>\u00a0in 2014 after years of academic research on companies around the globe. Laloux posits that as humans have evolved states of consciousness throughout history, they have developed organizational models to coincide.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3812\" src=\"https:\/\/ttconf.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/0_kKOANEHHqnDTe0DF.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ttconf.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/0_kKOANEHHqnDTe0DF.jpg 700w, https:\/\/ttconf.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/0_kKOANEHHqnDTe0DF-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ttconf.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/0_kKOANEHHqnDTe0DF-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/ttconf.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/0_kKOANEHHqnDTe0DF-370x370.jpg 370w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><br \/>\nSource:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sascha-kasper.com\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">SDK<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Teal can be credited with bringing about certain fundamental breakthroughs in how humans collaborate: concepts like self-management, wholeness, evolutionary purpose, and organizations as living systems.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Practiced by over 1,000 organizations globally,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.holacracy.org\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">holacracy<\/a>\u00a0replaces conventional management hierarchy with a concrete framework for encoding autonomy, agility, and purpose-alignment into your organization\u2019s DNA. Holacracy is a part of the Teal movement focused on self-management.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">In holacracy, positions, called \u201cRoles\u201d, are defined around the work, not people. Each person fills several roles according to one\u2019s skills and talents. They may come from different circles (groups of roles) and are defined by name, purpose, accountabilities and few other elements. Decisiveness and authority among the company is distributed to roles so all decisions are made locally.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3813\" src=\"https:\/\/ttconf.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/0_L91AFWl5_VTRpy_Y.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"476\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ttconf.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/0_L91AFWl5_VTRpy_Y.png 700w, https:\/\/ttconf.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/0_L91AFWl5_VTRpy_Y-300x204.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><br \/>\nSource:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.futurefrontiers.co\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Future Frontiers<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">If you aren\u2019t thinking about diversity, inclusion and equity, then you\u2019re shooting yourself in the foot. Isn\u2019t it obvious by now that we are each a product of our life experiences and awarenesses, so teaming up with folks who aren\u2019t like you would be advantageous to the organization, among countless other reasons? If nothing else, study after study shows how diverse teams outperform more homogenous teams.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">On that note,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/zebrasunite.com\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Zebras Unite<\/a>\u00a0is less of a strategy and more of a new story or cultural trend, calling for a more ethical and inclusive movement to counter existing startup and venture capital culture. It\u2019s that we haven\u2019t leveraged the gifts as the feminine nearly as much, and so we have an imbalance in society which is contributing to lots of our systemic challenges. A key difference is many of these masculine-associated qualities are concerned with \u201cdoing\u201d, while those of the feminine are related to being, allowing, opening, receiving.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@aandrewdunn\/on-startups-and-gender-8b5f205ec213\" rel=\"noopener\">We need both! We need a balance.<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">I appreciate Zebras Unite and Sister for raising awareness of these imbalances and inviting us to bring more of the heart into the business world. To be self aware, adaptive, omni-considerate in decision making, and creating change in the world that is long term sustainable and regenerative.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">At the end of the day, starting a business is extremely challenging, and sometimes it\u2019s easier just to take the tried and true path. We haven\u2019t even touched into alternative revenue models, governance models, compensation structures, go to market strategies.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">As psychological support and growth industries garner more visibility, TT companies have a unique responsibility to model better corporate citizenship. The invitation is to do your research and experiment with the ingredients that are best aligned with what wants to emerge, but not to a point of uncompromising stubbornness.
